Song Joong Ki's Decline?

The film ' Bogotá: The Lost City ' is struggling to attract box office audiences.

According to the Korean Film Council 's data on January 7, the film 'Bogotá: The Lost City' (directed by Kim Seong Je ), released on December 31, attracted only 336,348 viewers.

Despite its recent release, the film is currently ranked third at the box office, behind ' Harbin ' (directed by Woo Min Ho ) and ' Fire Brigade ' (directed by Kwak Kyung Taek ), both released earlier.

'Bogotá: The Lost City' tells the story of Guk Hee (played by Song Joong Ki), who travels to Bogotá, Colombia, a land of hope after the IMF crisis. There, he becomes entangled with influential figures in the local Korean community, such as Soo Young (played by Lee Hee Joon ) and Sergeant Park (played by Kwon Hae Hyo ).

Filming on the film began in 2019 and, after five years, was finally released, earning the "film on hold" label. Production faced numerous obstacles, including the suspension of filming on location in Colombia due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite these challenges, the film struggled to attract audiences, leading to disappointment.

Additionally, ' Hopeless ' (directed by Kim Chang Hoon ) and also starring Song Joong Ki, released in October 2023, also underperformed at the box office, attracting only 260,000 viewers. This marks Song Joong Ki's second consecutive box office failure.

This sparked an online discussion, with some netizens wondering if Song Joong Ki has lost his sparkle. The online community is divided on this issue, with some believing that this is a temporary setback in Song Joong Ki's career. They commented:

"It's possible he'll have another hit in the future, and even if he doesn't, it's not a big deal..."
"Mediocre movies are doomed to fail. Why spend 15,000 won on a ticket when you can subscribe to an OTT platform and watch a variety of things?"
"I'd rather see him in a drama. Watching movies these days seems like a chore..."
"People in Korea now have higher standards - it's no longer a time where people watch movies just because a certain actor is in it."
"It feels like 'Declaration of Emergency' all over again."
"Oh, I didn't even know it came out."
"I didn't know the movie until I watched Please Take Care of My Refrigerator and it made me curious. I thought I'd see it this weekend."
"His dramas seem like guaranteed hits, but his movies don't appeal to me at all."
"Bogotá? The only Bogotá I know is the one from Infinite Challenge - that quiz about Colombia's capital!"
"Bogotá looks super boring."
"Song Joong Ki's films tend to be dull..."
"I'm not even curious anymore how he's going to interpret a role. No matter what he does, it seems like he's always playing the same character from his past works."
"They say he's not good at genre roles, but given his performance in *Vincenzo*, it just seems like he needs to choose his projects more carefully. These days, people don't choose films based solely on the actor."
