Lee Sang Soon Opens Up About Being Known As Lee Hyori’s Husband, Denies Rumors Of Family Wealth
The Shadow of an Icon: Lee Sang Soon
Lee Sang Soon recently addressed rumors surrounding him, including those that he comes from a wealthy family, and expressed his feelings about being primarily known as "Lee Hyori's husband."
The singer was a guest on MBC FM4U 's November 21 show, 'Two O'Clock Date with Ahn Young Mi' .
Having moved from Jeju Island to Seoul with his wife, Lee Hyori, the couple made headlines after purchasing a house in Pyeongchang-dong for 6 billion KRW (~4.3 million USD) all in cash. Lee Sang Soon currently hosts MBC's radio show, ' A Perfect Day with Lee Sang Soon ' as a DJ.
Lee Sang Soon shared details about Lee Hyori’s current activities, saying, “She was excited for me to become a radio DJ. She always said I would be perfect for it.” He added, “When MBC Radio’s ‘Bae Chul Soo’s Music Camp’ needed a special DJ during a break, Hyori and I took over together. She loved it so much and said I was a natural fit for the job.”
Lee Sang Soon is often called “Lee Hyori’s husband,” a title he claims doesn’t bother him, but he hopes people can also see him for who he really is. When asked if he would prefer to be called “Lee Hyori’s husband Lee Sang Soon” or “musician Lee Sang Soon,” he chose the latter.
He expressed his thoughts by saying, “It’s not that I don’t like being called Lee Hyori’s husband—it’s natural, considering she’s a much more famous superstar than me. But before and after I met Hyori, I’ve always been a musician. My identity is that of a musician. Being Lee Hyori’s husband isn’t a job—it’s just who I am in relation to her.”
Lee Sang Soon also denied persistent rumors that he comes from a wealthy family. After the announcement of his marriage to Lee Hyori, speculation suggested that he was the son of a prominent family that owns a famous chain of rib restaurants in Busan.
Regarding the question, “Is your calmness the result of family wealth?” he replied, “No, that’s not true. The rumors started because of my maternal grandfather and the rib restaurant in Busan. But in truth, although the man called my grandfather is technically a relative, he is not my biological grandfather. He was my mother’s uncle, who raised her after her father passed away early.”
He added: “I had a great time visiting his restaurant when I was a kid. My brothers and I ate so many ribs there—probably dozens of servings. Even now, when I visit, I can eat there anytime, but wealth has no real connection to me.”
Lee Hyori actively supports Lee Sang Soon’s radio work, monitoring her broadcasts while taking care of their dogs and preparing dinner. He shared, “She texts me when an interesting story or song comes on air, and sometimes her messages are even read on air. She seems to be really enjoying this phase of life.”
Reflecting on his role as a DJ, Lee Sang Soon expressed his satisfaction with the format of his show. He explained, “I always wanted to be a DJ like the ones we listened to—sharing music and reading letters while connecting with listeners in a simple and sincere way. The production team really helped make that happen, and I love it. We only have one external guest per week, which helps keep things focused.”
