Chaos in the entertainment industry after South Korea's surprise declaration of martial law and its rapid cancellation
Showbiz turmoil after short-lived martial decree
The entertainment industry was thrown into chaos after President Yoon Suk Yeol unexpectedly declared martial law, which was rescinded just six hours later. While some events resumed as normal, others were postponed, reflecting ongoing political uncertainties.
Singer Lee Seung Hwan had initially canceled his concert but changed his mind after martial law was lifted, confirming that the event would go ahead as planned. In addition, a scheduled interview with actress Seo Hyun Jin was canceled. A PR agency commented, "Seo Hyun Jin's interview is canceled and Gong Yoo and Jung Yoon Ha 's interviews scheduled for December 5 and 6 are currently under discussion."
On the other hand, director Yang Woo Suk 's interview for the film 'Big Family' was held as scheduled, with organizers deciding to hold the event after closely monitoring the situation.
Singer Dua Lipa , who is currently on an Asian tour, has confirmed that her concerts in South Korea on December 4 and 5 will go ahead as planned. This marks her return to Korea after a six-year absence. Despite the confusion caused by martial law, Dua Lipa's team has assured that the concerts will go ahead, while remaining vigilant.
Similarly, Jang Bum Joon 's concerts on December 4 and 5 at Hyundai Card Understage are still on. Early in the morning of December 4, Jang posted on his YouTube channel, "Let's all do our best today to protect our precious daily lives. Given the unstable situation in the country, I will not be posting anything for the next two days. Stay informed and I will see you at the concert."
Movie premieres are also still on. The screenings of 'The Crow' at 2pm and 'These Trivial Things' at 4:30pm in Yongsan, Seoul will go ahead as scheduled. A representative from Pan Cinema , the distributor of 'The Crow', said, "The theater has not given any direction, so we plan to proceed. If there are any changes, we will inform immediately." Similarly, Green Narae Media , the distributor of 'These Trivial Things', confirmed that their event will go ahead.
President Yoon declared martial law at 10:23 p.m. on December 3, only to rescind it about six hours later at 4:27 a.m. on December 4, in a televised address from the presidential office in Yongsan.
