Controversy over "Squid Game 2" in Vietnam

The second season of the Netflix series, Squid Game 2 , has taken the world by storm, ranking first in 93 countries, including the United States, Japan, and France, for five consecutive days. However, in Vietnam, the series is facing calls for a boycott and an official investigation by the Vietnamese Film Authority.

The Vietnam controversy stems from an exchange in the series between Gi Hun , the main character, and Jeong Bae , played by Lee Seo Hwan, and another character, Dae Ho, a former Marine played by Kang Ha Neul. In one scene, Dae Ho mentions, " My father sent me to the Marines to strengthen me. He was a Vietnam War veteran ," to which Jeong Bae replies, " Your father must be an honorable man ."

This line sparked outrage among some Vietnamese viewers, who deemed the portrayal of South Korean soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War as "honorable" as insensitive and inappropriate. The outrage quickly spread among Vietnamese social media users, leading to calls for a boycott.

In response, the Vietnam Film Authority has launched a review of Squid Game 2 and is expected to announce an official verdict soon.
